We Didn’t Measure That! How Failure to Assess is Leading to Poor Adult Outcomes for HFA Individuals

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

New research shows that “high-functioning” individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are three times less likely to have a job or post-secondary education than those with autism and intellectual disability. What explains these counter-intuitive results? What are the factors that contribute to the poor outcomes for high-functioning individuals with autism? This session will reveal systematic weaknesses in transition assessment that can be linked to poor adult outcomes. We will identify ways that educational therapists can bring relevant assessment information to light, improving the transition process for these students and ultimately their quality of life.

Participants will be able to: summarize the new data on adult outcomes of individuals with ASD; describe systematic weaknesses in transition assessment and the link to poor adult outcomes; and explain how educational therapists can bring relevant assessment information to light, improving the transition process and the implementation of supports and services for students with ASD.
