This session will examine how various executive function (EF) skills, including remembering, organizing, prioritizing, planning, and self-monitoring, can be assessed to inform content instruction and support student achievement throughout the middle school years. The presenters will explore the confluence of research that generated an instructional model and informed a developmental, vertically-aligned executive function skills continuum for teacher reference. Application of strategies in both implicit and explicit instruction through corresponding activities will be explored.

Participants will be able to: describe a model of implicit and explicit instruction of executive function skills across the curriculum; identify strategies from the supporting research that contributed to the executive function skills continuum design; explain how EF skills can be best utilized to inform content instruction; and compare modeling, practice, and cueing strategies for EF skill development from leading researchers in the field.
