This session will explore how successful case management and student/family support is achieved through the process of collaboration with teachers, parents, school administrators, and allied professionals. The essential features that must be present to ensure successful collaboration have been identified by extensive research in education, government, and business. The educational therapist’s participation as a member of the educational team can be enhanced through the development of specific skills, attitudes, and behaviors that promote collaborative relationships. This presentation will describe the individual characteristics and attributes that contribute to the creation of effective teams and will demonstrate techniques and methods that promote their acquisition and use.

Participants will be able to: define collaboration and describe the essential elements of successful collaboration; explain the role of an educational therapist on a collaborative team; and apply three or more specific skills that encourage collaboration and minimize adversarial interactions.
