This session will illustrate how a University/College Disabilities Services office evaluates a student’s disability, approves or disapproves accommodation requests, and ultimately partners with that student to develop his/her learning awareness. The presenter will discuss how to evaluate the contents of a clinical report and identify critical information within the report that will best support the evaluation process. In addition, the session will examine how accommodations are determined and why there is such a broad range of approaches between colleges in approving accommodations. Finally, the presenter will address how to help students understand best practices to ensure a successful partnership with the student access services office.

Participants will be able to: advise students as to information to bring to a college/university disabilities office; assist students in preparing to talk about their limitations when meeting with the college professionals; work with clinicians to develop disability documentation; explain how students’ impairments are evaluated in the accommodations process; and describe options and resources for researching colleges that can best meet their needs.
